Abstract | Various practices have already been established to promote the value of Strategic Human Resource Management in organizations. The HR function is now considered as a strategic tool in the formulation and implementation of organizational strategies to attain its objectives. The function of work before which was a matter of necessity and survival has evolved encouraging organizations to create and establish new standards that will encourage employee retention and personal satisfaction. Studies in the US and Europe have already been made to test the effectiveness of good SHRM practices. This study will help readers find out the prevalence of such practices under Philippine setting. 30 selected Filipino firms were chosen as subjects for this study with specific aspects relating to work-life balance and labor relations practices. To determine its prevalence on the mentioned companies is the main objective of this study. |

Title | ASSESSING THE SHARPE RATIO OF EQUITY FUNDS IN THE PHILIPPINES |

Abstract | Adapting the work of Bansal, Kumar, & Gupta (2012), the "reward-to-variability ratio" (Sharpe, 1966, p. 123), commonly known as the Sharpe ratio (Sharpe, 1966), was used to measure the performance of five equity funds in the Philippines for three time periods (one year or 2010, three years or 2008-2010, and five years or 2006-2010). The funds that were used in the research were: ATR – Kim Eng Equity Opportunity Fund (ATRKE), First Metro Save and Learn Equity Fund (FMIC), Philam Strategic Growth Fund (Philam SG), Philequity Fund (Philequity), and Sunlife Prosperity Philippine Equity Fund (Sunlife). There was evidence of consistency when the funds were ranked. Relying on Brown & Reilly (2009), further analysis indicated that most equity funds (four out of five) outperformed the stock market. Thus, (1) investors would be better served by placing their money in actively-managed funds instead of an index fund and (2) the higher fees charged by actively-managed funds, compared to the fees charged by index funds (Mishkin & Eakins, 2009), appear to have merit. |

Abstract | While the State has been steadfast in its cognizance on labor as the ―primary social economic force,‖ some circumstances have casted some doubts over the State’s sincerity in upholding such public policy. One of this is the retail industry’s practice of subcontracting employees for less than six months. This paper explores the legal basis of such practice and proposes some policy recommendations and a research agenda in aid of legislation. |

Abstract | Assessment of potentially competent suppliers and selection of the right one(s) is a vital component of supply chain management which has received wide attention in recent years. An extensive range of decision making methods have been suggested to handle the supplier selection problem by a large number of authors in this area. The supplier selection problem is often faced by ambiguity and vagueness in practice and very often decision makers express their preferences in linguistic terms instead of numerical values. So, this paper intends to review the literatures on multi-criteria decision making methods in uncertain environment. Thirty-eight international journal articles published between 2008 and 2011 have been surveyed for this purpose. The articles are analysed to summarize the existing methods and the most popular method is identified and presented in this paper. Finally, suggestions for future researches are proposed for academics and decision makers. |

Abstract | With climate change rapidly becoming a more pressing issue in recent years, many governments have realized that they could not isolate environmental performance apart from other measures of development. As such, this study seeks to investigate the relationship of human development and governance to environmental performance. Using multivariate linear regression on cross-country data for 2010, it was found that human development and governance are directly and significantly related with environmental performance. It was further found that a country’s economic development category is not a significant predictor of environmental performance. This study provides additional evidence on the nature of the relationship of human development and governance to environmental performance to guide policy makes and implementers in pursuing sustainable development through improved human development and governance initiatives and programs. |

Abstract | The need for accurate estimates in software development continues to grow as more and more companies are experiencing cost overruns due to poor estimates. This study evaluates four of the most popular algorithmic models used to estimate software effort (Basic COCOMO, Intermediate COCOMO, Walston-Felix, and Bailey-Basili) using project data from a particular software company. The results show that these models cannot be used for the organization and should instead only be used as a rough estimate; thus, an estimation model is also developed for the company. Tests showed that the model developed is capable of estimating effort with a certain degree of accuracy although the model may be further refined by accounting and quantifying other factors that affect productivity. More focus should be done in creating a model and accounting cost factors for web application project types. Other size metrics apart from LOC should also be considered. |

Abstract | Since Malaysian announced her own Knowledge Economy Master Plan in her National Budget 2000, knowledge management has gained attention in many business organizations to remain competitive and innovative. Numerous insurance multinational companies started to recognize the new knowledge disseminations strategy by developing and manipulating the valuable knowledge of their employees‟ main assets to create a greater organizational knowledge-base strategy. Thus, this paper objectively describes the role of ICT infrastructures namely knowledge network and knowledge-based system embedded when managing knowledge assets among the multinational insurances operators in Malaysia. The focal point is to how technological advancement factors such as knowledge system and knowledge network helped enhancing knowledge sharing and knowledge codification within the scope of analyzing the existing practices of knowledge management activities in selected insurance companies operated in Northern Region of Peninsular Malaysia. In line with the objectives of the study, open-ended interview questionnaires have been distributed to business development managers and human resource development or training managers, as well as respective respondents who are dealing with insurance. The result indicated that ICT infrastructures, knowledge-based system and knowledge network have the significant relationship towards respondent‟s personal knowledge management experience. |

Abstract | This paper presents the design of Augmented Reality gamebook to enhance the performance of the conventional gamebook and replace it. Augmented Reality technology that employs animation in real scenes is to bring new digital entertainment experience to the viewers. Traditional gamebooks started to experience bored, become less attractive to gamers and easily obsolete. The conventional way of playing game does not satisfy the players anymore, it is because the interaction between the game and the player is limited to static objects such as text. Augmented Reality with its special characteristics enhancing the display output of real environment and the composition of virtual and reality can bring sense of deeper immersion to the players, thus greatly increasing the interest and attraction of game. |

Abstract | The aim of the following review of decision-making theories is to explore how decisions are made and implemented within organisations. Miller et al. (1996) developed a useful framework for examining studies in the decision-making area, using rationality and power as basic criteria. These two dimensions are important to the present discussion since rationality is something commented on by all management theorists, while the issue of power is central to the analysis of decision-making as a political process. The study focuses on describing the decision-making process within its historical and contextual framework and pointing out its political nature (Pettigrew 1985b). The following part of the study presents the various decision-making theories starting from the rational model, which is the most common one, and progressing to other views leading to the discussion of the political model of making decisions and moving on to the issue of power. |
